Bill Stumpf

"Bill Stumpf designed for Herman Miller for 36 years. He said it was a good match because he always believed, as our founder D.J. De Pree said, that good design isn't just good business—it's a moral obligation.

Stumpf met that obligation well. In 1972, he created the first ergonomic work chair, Ergon. That contribution to the well-being of office workers won him recognition as Designer of the Decade from I.D. magazine. In 1984 came the Equa chair, which was named Best Design of the Decade by Time magazine. In 1998, he and designer Don Chadwick, produced the Aeron chair, the most well-known office chair ever made and the Gold Winner in the Designs of the Decade competition held by the Industrial Designers Society of America and Business Week magazine. His last project, designed with his design partner Jeff Weber before his death in 2006, was the revolutionary ergonomic Embody chair, which won numerous awards.

""I enjoy myself, and I do it through design,"" Stumpf said. His enjoyment revolutionized how workers all over the world sit, work, and create and has improved millions of lives."
